Dr. Basant K. Pradhan was 16 when he left his childhood home in rural India and ascended into the mountains to study yoga at a monastery for two years. For the first four months, Pradhan — a yoga practitioner since age 7 and the grandson of a yogi — was not allowed to ask any questions. Why? “Because all the things you know are inside you, not inside me,” came the reply.
The human potential to self-heal is at the center of the new Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy program at Cooper University Health Care. Pradhan, an associate professor of psychiatry and the program’s founding director, teaches his patients yoga-based breathing and meditation techniques to treat psychological disorders.
