Pune – Internationally-renowned, 96- year-old yoga teacher BKS Iyengar was admitted to a hospital in Pune, India due to heart complications. His condition is said to be serious but stable.
Pandurang Rao, Iyengar’s secretary, said, “Guruji has been unwell and weak for the past 15 days. Before being shifted to a hospital for observation, he was being treated at home.” After a series of tests, Iyengar has been diagnosed with heart-pumping failure. Iyengar had suffered two heart attacks in 1998 and 2000 respectively.
Iyengar is however fully conscious, and is conversing with those around him and eating normal food. Iyengar travelled to Delhi in May, and stayed for a month in the city of Bangalore. “The trips certainly put a strain on him. Ever since he returned to Pune, he said he could feel the exhaustion,” Rao said.
